WHAT WE BELIEVE

GOSPEL COMMUNITY BIBLE CHURCH

Statement of Faith

Scripture

We believe that the Bible with all its 66 books is the Word of God. Verbally inspired by God, it is complete, without any error, and wholly trustworthy. We believe that the Bible is the sole and ultimate source of God's authority for men. It is sufficient in teaching us the will of God and the way of salvation so that man may be able to live a life that glorifies God. We believe that the Bible is the sole and ultimate source of God's authority for men and therefore constitutes the only infallible rule of our faith and practice. Delight and obedience to the Bible is one of the sure marks of a genuine Christian. (Matthew 5:18; 24:35; John 10:35; 16:12–13; 17:17; 1 Corinthians 2:13 Luke 24:27; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Timothy 3:15; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Peter 1:20–21)

God

We believe in one holy and happy God, infinite and perfect in all His attributes. This one God eternally exists in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We believe that these three persons are united in essence and equal in glory, therefore each is equally deserving of absolute worship and total obedience. We teach that God is the best Being and the most satisfying Reality in the whole universe as revealed in Christ Jesus, which is why He is most worthy to be loved above all. Thus, the best thing we can do for ourselves is to love God above all and the best thing we can do for others is to help them love God above all. (Matthew 28:19; John 1:1-4; Hebrews 1:1-3; Acts 5:3-4; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Revelation 1:4-6; Mark 12:29-30).

Jesus Christ

We believe that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. He existed from all eternity and came into the world to become the redeemer of sinful man. He lived a perfect life and died a sacrificial death in order to absorb the infinite wrath of God for sin and in the place of sinners. We teach that on the basis of the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ, the believing sinner is freed from the penalty, the power, and one day the very presence of sin; by faith in Him alone, the believing sinner is wholly forgiven, declared righteous, given eternal life, and adopted into the family of God (Matthew 1:18, 22-23; John 1:1-14, 18; Luke 1:30-35; Acts 20:28; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 1:1-5).

We believe that Jesus Christ arose bodily from the dead and is now at the right hand of the Father where He ceaselessly intercedes over those who are His. We believe that He will return again to judge the world, defeat Satan, establish His Kingdom, and eternally reign with all of His redeemed. (John 1:29; Romans 3:25-26; 2 Corinthians 5:14; 1 Peter 3:18; John 20:20; Ephesians 1:22; Hebrews 7:25; 1 John 2:1; Matthew 20:28; 1 Peter 2:22, John 14:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 4:14-18, 5:9; 2 Thessalonians 2:7-10; Matthew 24:29-31; Titus 2:11-14; Zechariah 14).

Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit, as the third person of the Trinity, is a real person and possesses all the attributes of God. Believers are born again by the power of the Holy Spirit. He indwells all believers enabling them to live a holy life, to witness for Christ, and to live for the glory of God. It is both the duty and privilege of every believer to daily live a Spirit-filled life. (John 3:5-8; 14:15-26; 16:5-16; Ephesians 1:13-14, Acts 1:8, 1 Corinthians 2:12; 2 Corinthians 3:17; Ephesians 5:18)

Man

We believe that Man was directly created by God in order to glorify and enjoy Him. However, man voluntarily fell into sin and became subject of God’s wrath and eternal punishment in hell. Man is a sinner both by nature and by choice. In his fallen nature, man is hopelessly lost and is totally incapable of saving himself. Man’s salvation is thereby wholly of God’s grace through the redemptive work of our Lord Jesus Christ (Genesis 1:26, 3:6; Romans 3:10-12; 1 Timothy 5:6; 1 John 3:8; Romans 5:12; Ephesians 2:1, 5).

Salvation

We believe that man is saved by grace alone, through faith alone, and on the basis of Christ’s work alone, and for the glory of God alone. However, although man is saved by faith alone, the faith that saves will not be alone in the life of the believer but will always be accompanied by a changed life which is marked by good works. Good works, however are not requirements for salvation, but rather a result and evidence of it. (Matthew 26:28; Romans 5:6-9; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 2:16, 3:13, 6:15; Ephesians 1:7, 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:18-19, 23; Romans 1:16-17).

We further believe that salvation is the work of the three persons of the Trinity with the Father’s election and predestination, the Son’s redemption by blood, and the Spirit’s regenerating work and preservation. Those whom the Father has elected, the Son redeems, and those whom the Son redeems, in time, the Holy Spirit regenerates and seals, all to the praise of His glory. (Ephesians 1:3-14, 1 Peter 1:1-2, Romans 8:29-30)

The Church

We believe that the church is the body of Christ, of which He is the head. The church refers not to a building but to all believers, which He purchased with His own blood. Every member of the church has been given by God a unique gift and ability to minister within the body for the spiritual edification of each member and the advancement of God’s work in the world. We believe in the importance of discipleship and mutual accountability of all believers to each other, as well as the need for loving discipline and restoration of sinning members in accord with the standards of Scripture. We also believe in the church’s mission of being a witness for Christ in the world by sharing the gospel to the lost. (Matthew 18:5–14, Matthew 28:19–20; 2 Timothy 2:2, Matthew 18:15–22; Acts 5:1–11; 1 Corinthians 5:1–13; 2 Thessalonians 3:6–15; 1 Timothy 1:19–20; Titus 1:10–16).

Eternal State

We believe that physical death is not the end, but that each person will enter either into eternal joy in God’s presence or into eternal damnation in hell, separated from God forever. Thus, we see life as a brief opportunity to serve and honor Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior as we live in eager anticipation of His soon return. (John 14:2-6; Philippians 1:23; 2 Corinthians 5:8; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Matthew 25:41-46; Revelation 21:11-15; 1 Corinthians 10:31; 1 Corinthians 15:58)
